What is Amnesty International and the Interpretation and Multilingual Engagement Unit?
Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million people who are committed to creating a future where human rights are enjoyed by everyone. Check our website for more details.

Amnesty International is made up of...

• The International Secretariat, the central office, which is responsible for leading the movement in areas such as research,

campaigning, legal, lobbying, communications, activism, mobilization and membership work to ensure that AI speaks with
one voice globally. The headquarters are in London and there are regional IS offices around the world.

• National entities, who carry out AI work (such as campaigning, lobbying, conducting research, etc.) at national and/or regional level. AI has sections set up in more than 70 countries.

• The Interpretation and Multilingual Engagement Unit is part of the Language Resource Centre, which provides expert language and production services to the movement. It is part of the International Secretariat in London and has a global remit. Moreover, it plays a role at the national and regional levels, although some national entities have their own language function. T​​​​​​​he core mission of the Interpretation Unit is to contribute to the enhancement of diversity and inclusion within the Amnesty human rights movement by providing high-quality conference interpretation services to promote the engagement of multilingual audiences. Hence, we coordinate all the interpretation needs of Amnesty International’s International Secretariat

for face-to-face, online and hybrid meetings.

What types of events or meetings that require pro bono interpretation?
The pro bono model applies to meetings and activities whose purpose is movement-wide or human rights impact. These include global, regional and national activities such as: advocacy meetings with key international stakeholders, governance, human rights education training courses, activism think tanks, capacity building sessions, report launches, youth-led projects and thematic workshops (on topics such as protecting the protest and the civic space, digital rights for youth, climate justice, gender-based violence, racism and discrimination, etc.), among others.

Why does collaborating with you matter?

• You will have the opportunity to learn about human rights abuses, activism and advocacy tools and humanitarian law, among others.

• You will share booth with professional conference interpreters from around the globe, which provides valuable networking opportunities.

• You can contribute to amplify the voice of this global movement and to the fight to end human rights abuses.

• New interpreters seeking to join AIIC can use their work with AI towards their required quota of days of work as working conditions offered to interpreters volunteering for the Secretariat meet AIIC's rules and regulations.

​Ecointerpreters - A volunteer-led non-profit organisation that aims to ensure that the voices of those stepping up for our Earth are heard, irrespective of their native language. We offer conference interpreting services & carry out educational projects.

​

Who do you collaborate with?​

Our allies are quite diverse, ranging from universities to indigenous peoples, but they all share a common value: their love for our planet and willingness to protect it. 

​​

Among others, we have managed the booths & provided interpreting services for:

• Several meetings between Original Peoples from Canada and Mexico

• Regular training sessions (May-November) organised by Oxford University and the Global Youth Coalition to prepare the youth for COP28

• The hybrid Global Greens Congress held in South Korea

• A webinar organised by one of the largest humanitarian organisations in the world on recording and cataloguing hazards and their impacts.

In the educational arena, we have given lectures on regenerative entrepreneurship, transformative agents to promote human & sustainable development...
